Our last day before flying home tonight. Mike was in a deep sleep so I got up at sunrise and sat on the deck with my morning cuppa whilst being laughed at by the Kookaburras. Today was shaping up to be a sunny but smoky day – smoke was blowing across from the east Melbourne bush-fires.
We were out of our accommodation at 10 am, luggage packed into the car and ready for the day ahead. Our flight wasn’t until 10:50 pm but we easily managed to fill the day. We spent a good portion of it at Point Nepean National Park at the very tip of the Peninsula hiking the stunning coastal trails, exploring the military forts & tunnels and the historic quarantine station.
Late afternoon we went to the Portsea Hotel for lunch and a refreshing beer and to see how the locals spend their bank holiday weekend. The 1876 hotel is an iconic local landmark with an enormous outdoor drinking/dining area and a lawn that leads the eye down to the water. I estimate that there is seating for about 400 and every table was full.
We hovered inconspicuously and in no time at all a table was vacated and I swooped in like a hawk and claimed it. It was one of the best tables, shaded but right at the front with great views. We took our time staying for a couple of hours, the people watching was immensely enjoyable and the view couldn’t be beat.
What a great way to wrap up our final few hours before heading to the airport for the long flight home.
