Derby don’t you dare!

Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes

The sun finally came out today and we were able to do our watches in shorts and tees rather than our foulies. Squalls come through with some regularity and give us a shower but it is not unpleasant.

Talking of showers, in order to conserve our precious water on board, we wash down with a bucket of sea water and suds and then have about 1 liter of fresh water to rinse off. I’ve never been a shower hog so it’s not too much of a challenge but boy am I glad I have short hair. This luxury spa treatment only comes around about every 5 or 6 days…get it while you can!

And so to Derby. Mr. Derby is a hurricane that has just been downgraded to a tropical storm and there’s a chance that he’s going to be there to greet us as we approach the finish line so we are sailing like billy-o to try and get there before him.

Skipper Greg and Navigator Mike are monitoring him closely and have a couple of different plans in mind as we get closer. Hopefully we will continue to make good progress and get into Kanehoe late on Sunday night before he starts to put on a show but should we slow down and not approach the finish until Monday or Tuesday we may have to take a longer route around Oahu to avoid him and get in later than we hoped.

We have good Intel on the storm from theweatherguy.com and will obviously choose the safest route.

In other news, we saw 3 airplanes pass overhead today and 5 birds. Very exciting events indeed!
