Captain’s hour

Estimated Reading Time: < 1 minute

Because of the way the watch schedule works, you relieve or are relieved by the same people on every watch so it’s actually very easy for 5 people to be together on a 40ft yacht for a couple of weeks and only see other crew members in passing, like ships that pass in the night if you’ll pardon the pun.

Captain’s hour allows everyone a chance to sit together, share stories and have a little tipple and is a tradition started in the 2014 PacCup and very enthusiastically upheld by Greg.

It took us a few days to get into the swing of it; seasickness will dampen the appetite of even the hardiest of drinkers.

Being a salty seadog, Greg’s tipple of choice is a shot of rum. Now I’m a rum drinker too but usually it’s served with a coke or a pineapple juice. Greg however appears to have done a lot of research into quality rums and I am learning to appreciate the difference between something that’s good enough to sip and something that needs a mixer.

Cheers!

I never said this trip would only be about learning to sail.
