During the summer of 2016 I crewed on a 40ft sailboat in the Pacific Cup which is a 2,070 mile Pacific Ocean crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii.
I’m not sure why Greg and Susan were so keen to have me aboard; it certainly wasn’t for my limited sailing skills. I suspect it was for my sunny disposition, enthusiastic willingness to help out with any job that needed doing, oh and more than likely because they REALLY wanted Mike to be the navigator…and we came as a package deal.
Despite more challenging conditions than we could have ever anticipated, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Disconnecting from the rest of the world and having a daily routine which only encompassed the boat and the 5 crew aboard was liberating. I enjoyed taking time at the end of my watches, before retiring to my bunk to get tossed around for a few hours, to quieten my mind and write for the first time in ages.
To follow are a few pieces I wrote for Greg and Susan’s blog while we were underway. I’m posting them here on my brand new and very bare blog, simply to dive in to the get the ball rolling, or should I say, to get the boat sailing…
